All About Dream

How does the power of the human imagination influence artists and designers in producing fantastic, dreamlike creation? Have you ever imagined you slept in an ‘over-sized’ shirt, as a bed you usually sleep on? Have you ever dreamt about dressing into a hot air balloon or have you ever thought that you saw a strange thing in the world which was a fish but had a human body? People always think these kinds of thoughts are over the top, but this is all about fantasy, our dreams and human imagination. Designers are able to create fascinating work; artists are able to construct gorgeous creations, because of the human imagination. In 1940 Dali summed up his aspiration to create objects, ‘I try to create fantastic things, magical things and things like a dream. The world needs more fantasy. Our civilization is too mechanical. ’ I will never forget his words, especially when he said, ‘We can make the fantastic real and then it is more real than that which actually exists. ’ I agree with him. I think the world needs more fantasy. People seem to forget how to dream and what dreams are. They are too sensible now. In my personal study, I would like to look at how the power of the human imagination influences artists and designers in their creations. I will first of all look at the surrealism movement which first appeared in Paris in 1924. In Oxford Intermediate Learner’s Dictionary, ‘surreal’ is an adjective which means images mixed together in a strange way like in a dream. In art, it is an expression of eccentric thoughts of the subconscious mind. Surrealist artists always create something which people think are nonsense, because their creation is influenced by their imagination and it is something that comes from dreams. There were lots of famous artists who came from the surrealism movement; Rene Magritte is one of the popular artists within this movement. Unlike other surrealist artists’ work, of rich and complex layers, Magritte’s works are straight forward and accessible. In â€Å"Magritte† written by Richard Calvocoressi, he described the way Magritte’s style was concentrated on the relation between the image of an object and object itself. I am totally in agreement with him. In addition, I have chosen to look at The Listening Room by Magritte. This is an example of the relation between the object and another object, by reducing the size of the room and enlarging the size of the apple. Magritte had tried to provoke a reaction from the audience. I found this picture especially interesting, because it clearly demonstrates how the artist uses his imagination and sub conscious to express his ideas. In 1956, Magritte wrote, ‘For me the conception of a picture is an idea of one thing or several things that can become visible through my painting. ’ I think Magritte means that his paintings are a means of expressing his ideas and his imagination. In The Listening Room which has a gigantic apple in its tiny room is one of the examples of Magritte’s variation of the objects scale. The apple is depicted realistically but the fact that it is so large within the room is very disconcerting. We cannot tell whether the apple is too big or the room is undersized. In his book Richard Calvocoressi has interpreted the painting as â€Å"a feeling of claustrophobia, of near panic,† this is generated by the sight of the objects, â€Å"behaving irrationally or adopting human characteristics. † I strongly agree with his idea that the painting makes you feel breathless in the room which makes the audience have a deep impression. In ‘VOGUE’ April 2006, there was an article with a surreal photograph which linked in the topic of ‘Small space, Big Idea’. The idea of the picture is basically same as ‘The listening room’. A model suffered in an unfitted room which is as big as she is. It seems that the model is a giant, otherwise is a model come to a draft house. When I first look at this picture, a feel of claustrophobia and uncomfortable were came into my mind. The picture had just gave a very deep impression to the audience. Magritte has written that, ‘The only thing that engages me is the mystery world. I think this means that he likes to challenge his audience with a sense of unusual and the strange. Calvocoressi went on to say ‘these ideas were in the nature of speculation on the world. ’ I think that by this he means that surrealist artists were challenging their audience to look at the world in a different ways, and try to introduce the world of fan tasy. Magritte is also successfully bringing surreal fantasy into our daily life. Just like Magritte, Salvador Dali is another famous surrealist. He had and enormous impact on twentieth-century painting. He based all his work on the human imagination and sub conscious. I found ‘Three Young Surrealistic Women Holding in Their Arms the Skins of An Orchestra' which is painted in 1936 is particularly interested me, because the image in the objects in the painting are strange and behaving in a strange way. In his seminal essay ‘The conquest of the Irrational'(1935), Dali has described his quest, ‘My whole ambition in painting manifest the images of concrete irrationality in terms of authoritative precision†¦images which for the moment can neither be explained nor reduced by logical systems or rational approaches. I think Dali means he is trying to show irrational images using a visual language. Therefore his fantasy world could actually come ‘alive'. This is another great example of Dali's variation of objects melting. It shows three shapely but mysteries women who are standing on a sandy place, holding fluid instruments which seem to be slide away from them. The colour of the piano is sandy colour which is confusing as to whether the piano is made of sand or not. The women are portrayed with heads of flowers, which adds a calming and serene effect to the painting. In Dalinian symbolism the heads of flowers represent the sexuality of the woman. In the background, we have a landscape of Catalonia, the rocky crags that line the Mediterranean Sea near Port Lligat and Cape Creus. Behind the woman who is holding the piano skin, there seem to be a reflection of the rocky crag, but because of the colour of the ground, we cannot tell whether there is the sea or not. It seem to me they are inside a very quiet place, which I believe is the colour effect, because the major colour of the picture is white, which represent innocence, purity and virginity. In 1938, Elsa Schiaparelli interprets images from three Dali’s painting of 1936, which are Necrophiliac Springtime, The Dream Place Its Hand On Man’s Shoulder and Three Young Surrealist Women Holding in Their Arms The Skins of An Orchestra. She create a real dress taking the idea out of those three painting. ‘The real dress (like the dream dress in the paintings) dissolves the boundary between clothing and body. ’ In Surreal Things by Glislaine Wood. The dress is like the garment wear in the painting Three Young Surrealist Women Holding in Their Arms The Skins of An Orchestra, Schiaparelli may use a flimsy fabric with a next to the skin cutting to bring the woman in the painting into the live. The pattern on the fabric designed by Salvador Dali, which is ‘printed with the illusion of torn animal skin’, suit in the painting, where the women are wearing a torn white dress. Another accompanying with the garment is the veil which ‘appliqued with fabric that adds a third dimension to the illusionary tears. The collection finale has featured a traditional wedding dress but twisted in the surreal way, which again synthesized human imagination as well as surrealist’s dream and bring it into the daily life. ‘Schiaparelli’s designs often lost their Surrealist references when the original model copied by department-store couture salons or by manufacturer who adapted them for the mass market. ’ B y Glislaine Wood. We still need to be more realistic about the fashion we wear in our daily life. Although that is the fact, human imagination is affecting our daily life. In the way, I have chosen to look at Viktor & Rolf ‘s collection in Fall Winter 2005, because they had put their imagination into the real life, every garment in this collection are fantasy creation. They had been inspired everything by bed, and able to convert this idea to a wearable collection. Viktor & Rolf dreamed up a surreal idea, ‘Why not go to work in your bed? ‘(written by Sarah Mower in style. com). It had make me queries about this idea. Firstly, we will never go to work in our bed, also how can this dreamlike idea come to realistic; secondly, how can it link to their collection. As soon as I looked at the collection, my queries had all been answered. The first model had come down on runway with her hair spread over on a lace-edged cotton pillow as a ‘collar', with neatly folded over sheet as her coat. On my personal view, she looked like a sleeping beauty and dressed into a sleeping bed. In fact, ‘Viktor & Rolf don't allow surrealist antics to block the view of their increasingly accomplished way with smartly normal cloth'(written by Sarah Mower in style. om). After the sleeping beauties, they had a second part of the collection. The most eye catching garment was a white lacing edges with a great contribution of folded fronts. The garment has show the exaggeration a normal white shirt created by human imagination. The garment was a very simple design but after twisted by imagination of the design, it bec ame a dreamlike fantasy. The Viktor & Rolf Fall Winter 2005/06 collection had show a series of surrealistic ideas, the power of human imagination had influenced Viktor & Rolf's creation. By having simple daily object, bedspread needlework, the idea had been turned into a array of skirts, jackets and pant. Everything about this collection is inspired, John Galliano said,† by Pinkerton's affair with Cio-Cio San, Madame Butterfly† With regard to this nspiration, every models in this collection has given a ‘fully painted, red lips and full Kabuki style make up' ( Camilla Morton, elle. com) The make up are obviously overstate, but the clothes do not make the audience be disappointed as well. The first exited model shown a bright pink formal jacket with an enlarged origami collar and pockets, decorated with beading and embroidery; the other m odel came to the stage with a big lily origami laid over on her shoulder, the fabric used for the lily look like a traditional Japanese origami paper. On my personal view, she looked like a flower fairy dance on the stage. The surprise will never ended in Galliano's creation. A bright green kimono-like jacket, with a exaggerated large gathered sleeve and very traditional Japanese pattern, underneath this gorgeous jacket, we have a sleeveless, long shaped yellow dress with the same pattern on the jacket. This garment was really stand out because of the colour. This collection ‘reconfirmed his unique talent to evoke beauty, sensitivity, narrative, and emotion in fashion show' (written by Sarah Mower in style. om) These garments to the population are over-the-top, but they are coming from human imagination, they are dreamlike creature, the most important point is they are not just a art pieces but wearable. Although the collection has a theme of Japanese costume, but it is different from the original. They are full of imagination and dreamlike creature, this make Sarah Mower in style. com think, ‘What psychological process did it take to lift John Galliano to the extraordinary place of brilliance he reached–or rediscovered–in his spring couture? From the stage set decorated with cherry blossoms, to the garments themselves, everything is surreal and has been exaggerated. The Japanese art of paper folding has been used in fabric and give the garment an extra decoration. Everything is like a dream in this fashion, something different and something new has explored by John Galliano. In this age, efforts and time are exhausted by many individuals or groups in order to create technologies that can be utilized in any human endeavour. Conversely, for most of these innovations and inventions to function, electricity is required. In the Philippines, a country that is abreast with technologies, majority of the electricity requirement is derived from electric power plants that are run by fossil fuels such as petroleum and coal. Moreover, batteries which are portable source of the said energy are also in use. However, due to rapid increase in technologies that require electricity, some problems arise. At present, since there is a huge demand for electricity, fuel required to generate such energy becomes scarce. People have realized that most of processes and materials for electricity generation have negative effect on the environment and on health of human. Hence, researches are conducted to discover green (clean, natural, derive from biological source), low cost, and readily available alternative source of electricity. In line with this view, Filipinos actively participate to achieve this purpose by introducing malunggay (Moringa oleifera) as an important source of not only nutrition and medicine but of electricity as well. Malunggay is a tree that preferably grows in countries with tropical climate such as the Philippines. This tree can be easily propagated since malunggay can be grown from seeds or mature stem cuttings. In the country, this tree is commonly found in household backyard, aligned with perimeter fences, since the edible and nutritious flowers, fruits, and leaves of malunggay are part of the diet of Filipinos. Aside from the nutritional value of some parts of malunggay, all parts of this tree are used in herbal medicine to cure some diseases. Given that this tree can serve several purposes, malunggay becomes in demand. In light of the discussion of the environmental problems and characteristics of malunggay, a group of researchers conducted a study entitled MOB Electricity: Malunggay Bark Extract as Alternative Source of Electricity, to show that malunggay (Moringa oleifera) bark extract is a viable alternative source of electricity; consequently, providing an environment friendly, inexpensive and accessible source of electricity. At this point in time, since there is a strong desire to improve way of living, great attention is given to technologies. Due to this interest, innovations and inventions which require electricity are continuously developed. Thus, electricity must be continuously generated. On the contrary, most of the processes and materials for electricity generation pose hazards to the environment and human health. Statement of the Problem This study entitled MOB Electricity: Malunggay Bark Extract as Alternative Source of Electricity intends to investigate the feasibility of Malunggay (Moringa oleifera) bark extract as an alternative source of electricity. Specifically, this study sought to answer the following questions: 1. Is there a significant difference on the amount of voltage measured from liquid form of malunggay bark extract obtained through crude and ethanol extraction? 2. Is there a significant difference on the amount of voltage measured from jelly form of malunggay bark extract obtained through crude and ethanol extraction? 3. Ho: There is no significant difference on the amount of voltage measured from liquid form of malunggay bark extract obtained through crude and ethanol extraction. Scopes and Limitations The focal point of this study is the feasibility of malunggay (Moringa oleifera) as an alternative source of electricity. In order to assess the said feasibility, malunggay bark extract obtained through crude and ethanol extraction was utilized. Subsequently, voltage was measured for different set-ups and treatments. However, the researchers were unable to determine the component of the extract responsible for electricity generation since the material was not subjected to chemical analysis. This restriction might be an additional recommendation for future researches. The researchers conducted this study from January 9, 2012 to August 23, 2012. All experiments and observations were done at JICA laboratory of Sapang Palay National High School. F. Operational Definition of Terms Gelatin Powder used to create a firm form of extract. Carbon Rod -served as the positive electrode (anode) of the external circuit connected to malunggay bark exract. Zinc Plate served as the negative electrode (cathode) of the external circuit connected to malunggay bark extract. Multi-tester used to measure the amount of voltage from malunggay bark extract. CHAPTER II REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE I. Introduction In the onset of the 21st century, negative effects of environmental issues such as pollution, ozone depletion, and global warming become notable. Thus, these problems gained the attention of people around the world. Among these negative effects are development and widespread of diseases, development of skin cancer, increase in temperature, heavy rains, heavy floods, strong typhoons, and climate change. In response, organizations are created, and conventions and researches are conducted to deal with these issues. Today, as data are continuously gathered;various human activities that involve emission of gases, chemicals, and radiations are considered as one of the large contributor to environmental degradation. Such human activities include generation of electricity. However, since electricity is vital in operating technologies which advances human lives, search for clean alternative source of electricity should be conducted to prevent further degradation of the environment. II. Electricity Generation Electricity is the form of energy that has the highest demand at this point in time. This energy form is required to operate technologies that people created for life advancement. Thus, energy industries are in continuous search to supply the needed demand of electricity. Today, there are different sources from which this energy is derived. These sources include fossil fuels (petroleum and coal), nuclear energy, hydropower, solar energy, and wind energy. These sources are used to drive turbines in electric power plants which will generate electricity. Electricity generated from these sources is the one supplied in wall sockets of houses and buildings. Another source of electricity is battery, a source that is in portable form. In connection to this notion, researchers have considered different plants, different parts of plants, and organisms as potential source of green electricity. (U.S Environmental Protection Agency, 2012) Basic example of green energy is electricity from fruits and vegetables. Many people, during childhood, have done classroom experiments to derive electricity from lemon and potato. Results of these experiments proved that these materials can generate electricity because juices of fruits and vegetables act as electrolytes which initiate reaction to free and move electrons. (Renico, 2012) On the other hand, another related research was conducted by scientists of Stanford University which harness electricity from algae. The concept behind this project is the process of photosynthesis involved in food production of plants. According to the scientists, in this process, electrons from water are given with high energy by sunlight. These electrons are the one the scientists captured using electrodes. (Stanford University, 2010) Lastly, researchers of Arizona State University study the possibility for bacteria to generate electricity through the use of a microbial fuel cell (MFC) which contains waste water and bacteria dwelling on the material. In this research, the persons involve relate electricity generation to metabolic activity of bacteria. (Arizona State University, 2008) IV. Malunggay Tree Malunggay (Moringa oleifera) tree, which commonly grows in tropical countries such as Philippines, is characterized by long, straight, white trunks; small, green, compound leaves; and seasonal white flowers that yields long pods. This tree propagates easily and does not require much attention. In fact, malunggay seeds or matured stem cuttings can be planted in any kind of soil and does not require regular maintenance. (Asia Green Group, 2012) In the Philippines, malunggay can be found in most household backyards because edible parts of this tree (flowers, pods, and leaves) are part of Filipino cooking. Moreover, these parts of malunggay tree provide people with vitamins and minerals needed by the body. Aside from providing nourishment, this tree also has medicinal value. Based on numerous studies, malunggay contains chemicals that have antibacterial, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory properties. (Fahey, 2005) CHAPTER III METHODOLOGY Gathering of Materials/Equipments Among the materials gathered by the researchers were malunggay (Moringa olifera) bark, gelatin powder, ethyl alcohol, filter paper, gloves, face mask, and old batteries. Equipment as well was borrowed from the school laboratory. These equipments include beakers, reagent bottles, funnel, stirring rod, thermometer, mortar and pestle, alcohol lamp, triple beam balance, strainer, tripod, and wire gauze. Collection of Zinc Plate and Carbon Rod Researchers collected old batteries. Subsequently, these batteries were uncovered and electrolyte inside was removed. Since electrolyte component of battery is composed of slightly toxic chemicals, researcher wore gloves and face mask. In this manner, zinc plates and carbon rods were obtained. Preparation of Malunggay Bark Extract A. Crude Extraction Malunggay barks were collected and cut into small pieces by the researchers. Afterwards, the barks were placed in a blender. Finally, in order to obtain pure extract, minced barks were placed in soft cloth and squeezed. B. Ethanol Extraction Malunggay barks were collected and cut into small pieces. Then, barks were placed in a blender to mince the material. Next, minced barks were oven-dried for 5 minutes and were pulverized with mortar and pestle. After this process, 100 grams of pulverized bark was placed in a reagent bottle in which 250 ml of ethyl alcohol was poured afterwards. Lastly, extract which was rested for 10 hours for purification purpose was filtered through a funnel with filter paper. Varying the Amount of Bark Extract Amount of bark extract obtained through crude and ethanol extraction was varied for each treatment. 5 ml of extract was allotted to Treatment I, 10 ml for Treatment II, and 15 ml for Treatment III. Preparation of Jelly Form of Malunggay Bark Extract In a beaker, constant volume (5 ml) of water was poured and heated to 70oC. When water reaches the specified temperature, constant amount (10 g) of gelatin powder was added into the water. Then, the solution was continuously stirred. Before the solution solidifies, the assigned amount of extract per treatment was poured without stopping the stirring process. Material was immediately removed from heat. Measuring Voltage Zinc plate and carbon rod were installed to each treatment. From these electrodes, multitester was connected to measure voltage. Measurement was done for five times. Subsequently, voltage measured from each treatment was recorded. CHAPTER V SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS Summary: This study entitled MOB Electricity: Malunggay Bark Extract as Alternative Source of Electricity aspires to prove if malunggay bark extract could be a possible source of electricity and to ascertain if there would be a significant difference when the method of extraction, form of extract, and amount of extract are varied. In order to test the feasibility of malunggay bark extract as alternative source of electricity, the researchers prepared two different set-ups and under each set-up there are three treatments. For the second set-up, amount of gelatin powder and amount of water used in each treatment were controlled. Then, voltage was measured in each treatment per set-up for five times using a multi-tester. The results obtained from different set-ups were analyzed using Two-Factor ANOVA with Replication. The results are summarized as follows: On the first set-up, statistical analysis showed that there is significant difference in the amount of voltage measured from liquid form of malunggay bark extract when method of extraction and amount of extract were varied. On the second set-up, statistical analysis showed that there is significant difference on the amount of voltage measured from jelly form of malunggay bark extract when obtained through different extraction method. Furthermore, statistically significant difference also exists on the amount of voltage reading when the amount of said form of extract was varied. Statistical analysis of Tables 3.0 and 3.1 indicate that there is significant difference on the amount of voltage measured when the form of extract and amount of extract were varied. Conclusion: Based on the results of statistical analysis and observations, the researchers conclude that malungggay bark extract could be a viable alternative source of electricity. Moreover, the people behind this study were able to discover that the 15 ml liquid form of extract obtained through crude extraction yielded the highest and most stable amount of voltage among all the treatments done. Recommendations: In this study the researchers encountered some hindrances which limited the scope of the investigation. Hence, only test for the feasibility of malunggay bark extract as an alternative source of electricity was conducted. Nonetheless, the study does not end with this objective. There are other factors related to electricity generation in malunggay bark extract that should be considered. Researchers would like to propose the following to other people who consider pursuing this project: Further increase volume of extract in order to obtain higher voltage reading. Convert the extract in a form that will facilitate easier and more stable voltage measurement. Subject the extract to chemical analysis to determine the component responsible for electricity generation. Develop a way to harness electricity from the extract.

Ogden Nash's poem, â€Å"I do, I will, I have† is about the formal union of a man and a women. It's usually recognized by the law in which they become husband and wife. In other words, it's a poem about a marriage. He's describing the way a marriage works. I think many people could agree or disagree with his views, however, he outlines the basics to a marriage.Without describing his poem line from line, the overall purpose of this poem is to point out that marriages are always different. Typically a marriage won't work out when the two people are exactly the same. When he wrote â€Å"just as I am unsure of the differnce between flora and fauna and flotsam and jetsam,† he's comparing two different words that have the same meaning. This can relate to marriage in which the meaning of a marriage will always be the same but always with two different lives. That phrase is considered to be an idiom. It's a metaphorical statement with a figurative meaning that's separate from i ts literal meaning.In line 13, the word â€Å"Quick† is capitalized. When I first read this, I thought she was telling him to quickly get up. Then I realized it was capitalized and the word actual could be used to describe what she's saying or as his name. The title of the poem â€Å"I do, I will, I Have† I think it's significant as well. It's showing that most marriages end in divorce. It would either be his experience or the experience of many others. Another observation I made is from lines 11 through 14.He's not only showing they have two different views but the differences in being optimistic and pessimistic. The guy is seen as being optimistic. He's very laid back, hopeful and confident about things. Shes very pessimistic and things the worst and always seems to be worrying. I think with this statement he's showing the stereotype between a man and a women. Most men and women are seen in the same way that he portrayed them.Now days marriages aren't as common as th ey used to be. Less people are getting married today rather than in the past. I think this stereotype has to do with both peoples views and experiences but also the fear of a heartbreak. When he wrote â€Å"that is why marriage is more interesting than divorce,† he's saying that there's more to a marriage than most people see. His poem views marriage in a good way in the beginning but then it leads to divorce. Now days I think it's always seen in both ways from the beginning and that's why there are less marriages.

The twentieth century ushered in the development of Filipino literature in English. Weeks after the capitulation of Manila, the U.S. Military Government was set up and, almost seven schools were re-opened as a necessary strategy to promote the pacification of the Philippines and the dissemination of common culture. English was first taught merely as a subject because the Spanish system of education then existing in the Philippines was allowed to continue. In April 1900, by virtue of President McKinley’s directives of the Philippine Commission, English became the official medium of instruction in the public schools. In order to accelerate the pacification drive, schools were established in all parts of the Philippines. The early teachers were taken in directly from the army. To augment the small number of American teachers, the Philippine Normal School, now Philippine Normal University, was founded in 1902 to train Filipinos in the art of teaching and eventually take charge of elementary education. In the same year, the Army transport, Thomas, brought six hundred American teachers to the Philippines who replaced the soldiers as teachers. They introduced to the Filipinos English and American literature in the form of works written by Irving, Chaucer, Milton, Donne, Shakespeare, Emerson, Hawthorn, Poe, Longfellow, Bryant, Keats, Shelley, Coleridge, Lamb, Joyce, Tennyson, Macaulay, and other famous writers. These were the writers w ho became the models of the early Filipino writers in English. At first, Filipino writing in English was quite formal and imitative, thus, the common reference to this period was known as Apprentice period. Influences from the Spanish language could be seen in the use of Spanish expressions and in ornate style. Grammatical expression were at times awkward and there was difficulty in the use of prepositions and pronouns. The first thirty years of Philippine literature in English produced little in the fields of drama and novel. Drama was hardly written, because vernacular plays and zarzuela still dominated the stage. The plays produced  were highly emotional, not intellectual experiences. The short stories produced during this period were either romantic tales of the past with legendary figures or were imitations of plots or themes taken from American and other sources. The most significant short story produced during the period was â€Å"Dead Stars† by Paz Marquez Benitez. Poetry was dominated by naà ¯ve sentimental love lyrics written in a loose rhetoric without much intellectual significance and overblown to achieve intensity. Verbal exuberance made the poems bombastic, artificial and insincere. TCDD dioxin is the most toxic of a class of organochlorine chemicals including chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (CDDs), dibinzofurans (CDFs), polychlorinated biphenals (PCBs), brominated dibenzo-p-dioxins (BDDs), brominated dibenzofurans (BDFs), and polychlorinated pesticides etc. These groups of chemicals have been shown to exert hormonal effects that disrupt the endocrine system of wildlife resulting in adverse effects on reproductive system development and hormones, foetal development, and the immune system at extremely low levels of exposure (Windham, 2000; Are Environmental Hormones Emasculating Wildlife, 1994). Dioxins have been found to have both estrogenic and anti-estrogenic effects depending on the organ or tissue affected. The toxic metals mercury, lead, and cadmium as well as phenols have also been found to have reproductive and endocrine system disrupting effects (Windham, 2000). Chemicals with estrogenic effects cause cells to produce surplus levels of oestrogen, which has been linked to breast cancer, testicular cancer, lowered sperm counts, and malformation/mutations of male sex organs, and a decreased number of successful male births. Exposure to relatively low levels of these chemicals have been documented to have had catastrophic effects on populations of Beluga whales, alligators, turtles, mink, otters, bald eagles, osprey, cormorants, terns, herring gulls, migratory birds, chickens, lake trout, chinook and coho salmon, etc. For example only 60 parts per billion (ppb) of DDE are required to cause anti-androgenic effects on male test animals (Colborn, 1999; Pritchard, 2004). These chemicals act in a variety of ways; however, their mechanism of action could be broadly described as mimicking oestrogen thereby increasing oestrogen levels in the blood, anti-estrogenic; binding with oestrogen receptors or anti-androgenic; binding with androgen receptors. Some chemicals known to bind to estrogens receptors include insecticides (dichlorodiphenyl-trichloroethane (o,p'-DDT), methoxychlor, and chlordecone); a monomer used in plastic (bisphenol A); an alkylphenol surfactant used in detergents, cosmetics and toiletries, and other household products (octylphenol); and a plasticizer (butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP).
